Description

An exclusive museum-level memorial issue published for the 1300th anniversary of Yakushi-ji monastery and the landmark restoration of the West Pagoda. It unites works by Abbot Takada Koin and the outstanding artist, Holder of the Order of Culture Hirayama Ikuo:

Front shikishi — “Sutra of Emptiness”: a monumental calligraphic character 空 (“Emptiness”) and a poetic admonition on non-attachment. On the right is the Inshu-in seal (“Clot of Harmony”), on the right the signature (Koin) and personal seals.

Inner shikishi — “Sange petal with the deity Gentoku Ten”: a ritual purple petal for the flower-scattering ceremony. The gold drawing of a warrior-guardian was made personally by Hirayama Ikuo. On the left is the monastic inscription of Yakushi-ji temple, on the right the signature of the abbot (Shaku Koin) and a seal.
