About the collection and the masters
Assembled over many years, the collection brings together more than 140 works of Japanese heritage from the 19th to the 21st century: porcelain and ceramics from historic manufactories, art glass, traditional decorative and applied arts, and painting.
Alongside the principal artistic traditions of Arita, Kutani and Kyoto, the collection includes celebrated ceramics and studio art. A special place is held by pieces connected with the “Six Ancient Kilns of Japan” — regions designated as Japan Heritage (日本遺産), such as Bizen, Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki and Tamba.
The artists represented in the catalogue deserve separate mention. Many of them have received state and professional awards, honorary titles and international prizes, and their works are held in the collections of the leading museums and art galleries of Japan, Europe and the United States:
These names are only a part of a deep artistic and historical heritage, united into a cultural whole that has its own history, unquestionable value and considerable investment potential.

Types and forms
- Biamagu ビアマグ
- a traditional Japanese tall beer tumbler (beer mug). Pieces in unglazed ceramics (for example, Bizen) are highly valued for their ability to hold a dense, lasting head.
- Bunbako 文箱
- an elegant rectangular interior box, historically intended for keeping letters, poetry scrolls and official documents.
- Guinomi ぐい呑
- a classic sake cup. It differs from the miniature cups in its larger size, free form and pronounced texture.
- Kabin 花瓶
- a general category of large interior or floor vases for flowers.
- Kazaritsubo 飾り壺
- a ceremonial, monumental decorative vessel or large round vase with a narrow neck and a lid, made to adorn an interior.
- Katakuchi 片口
- a round bowl with a single pronounced pouring spout. Used for serving sake, tea (as a chaire) or sauces.
- Kyusu 急須
- a traditional Japanese teapot. The best-known form has a horizontal side handle set at a right angle to the spout.
- Ochoko おちょこ
- a miniature, classic sake cup, often part of a single set with a tokkuri flask.
- Sakazuki 杯
- a ceremonial flat sake cup in the form of a wide saucer on a small foot. Historically used for ceremonies and for military and commemorative awards.
- Shuki-zoroi 酒器揃
- a complete authentic drinking set (sake set), traditionally comprising one or two tokkuri flasks and several cups.
- Tokkuri 徳利
- a traditional sake-serving flask with a characteristic narrow neck and a widening body (often pear- or drop-shaped).
- Chawan 茶碗
- the canonical deep bowl of the tea ceremony, used to prepare and drink powdered green matcha tea.
- Tsutsu-hanaire 筒花入
- a strict cylindrical vase (lit. “tube vase”), created within the canons of tea aesthetics for ikebana arrangements.
- Yunomi 湯呑
- a traditional tall cup (a cup without a handle) for everyday drinking of hot green tea.
Decorative techniques and materials
- Bidoro ビードロ
- from the Portuguese vidro (glass). In ceramics (especially Shigaraki), a glassy, running olive-green glaze formed naturally from melted wood ash.
- Goma 胡麻
- lit. “sesame seed”. A kiln effect in unglazed ceramics: runs and flecks of fine golden-mustard glaze produced by the melting of ash in a wood-fired kiln.
- Gohon-de 御本手
- the “rouge effect”. Picturesque soft pinkish-orange patches showing through the pale glaze of Hagi ceramics as a result of a complex reduction firing.
- Kinsai / Kinrande 金彩 / 金襴手
- a refined technique of hand-gilding ceramics and porcelain with gold leaf or liquid gold pigment, followed by a fixing firing.
- Kintsugi 金継ぎ
- lit. “golden joinery”. The traditional Japanese art of restoration. Cracks and chips are not concealed but delicately filled with urushi lacquer mixed with powdered gold, turning a flaw into a virtue.
- Kochi-yaki 交趾焼
- a rare technique of bright polychrome glazes with a pronounced raised outline of clay cord, going back to South Chinese traditions.
- Maki-e 蒔絵
- lit. “scattered picture”. A highly artistic Japanese technique of lacquer decoration in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet urushi lacquer.
- Mingei 民芸
- a movement for the revival of traditional folk crafts and of the “beauty of everyday things”, founded by the philosopher Yanagi Soetsu in the 1920s.
- Mishima / Inka 三島 / 印花
- a technique of decorating ceramics with stamped or incised small ornaments, which are then filled with contrasting clay (slip).
- Moriage 盛り上げ
- a technique of raised overglaze decoration on porcelain with enamels or slip, creating a relief design that can be felt with the fingers.
- Sometsuke 染付
- classic underglaze painting on porcelain in cobalt, which after firing takes on a deep blue or blue-black shade on a white ground.
- Tetsu-yu 鉄釉
- a deep, multilayered glaze with a high content of iron oxides, giving rich transitions in caramel, brown and black tones.
- Urushi 漆
- a natural lacquer made from the refined sap of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum). On hardening it forms an exceptionally durable, mirror-glossy coating.
- Hakeme 刷毛目
- a technique of expressive decoration of a vessel with strokes of white slip applied with a coarse dry brush, which exposes the darker layer of clay beneath.
- Ha-mei 葉銘
- a rare organic trace on unglazed ceramics: the natural imprint of a living tree leaf, which was attached to the base of the piece and burned away completely during the wood firing.
Cultural and technical context
- Wabi-sabi 侘寂
- a key Japanese aesthetic concept that prescribes valuing true beauty in its transience, incompleteness and noble imperfection (asymmetry, traces of time, roughness of texture).
- Yohen 窯変
- lit. “change in the kiln”. An unpredictable, unique pattern of shades and scorch marks on the body of a piece, formed solely by the movement of the flame and the settling of ash.
- Noborigama / Anagama 登り窯 / 穴窯
- traditional Japanese multi-chamber climbing kilns and single-chamber kilns for multi-day high-temperature wood firing of stoneware.
- Ryakureki 略歴
- an official printed insert giving a short biography of the master, the history of his kiln, and a list of state awards and museum exhibitions.
- Tomobako 共箱
- an authentic box of valuable, seasoned wood (often paulownia), made specially for a particular piece. On the lid the master or owner personally inscribes in ink the calligraphic title of the object, his signature and the impression of a personal seal. It is the principal certificate of authenticity.
